Richard trained first in dentistry at Bristol then in medicine & continued surgical training in Glasgow. After higher training in oral and maxillofacial surgery in Liverpool he subsequently completed an interface fellowship in head and neck surgery.

He was one of the first OMFS surgeons awarded a Royal College of Surgeons of England Research Fellowship enabling him to undertake his thesis entitled “Epigenetic biomarkers in head and neck cancer” which was presented as an invited keynote lecture at the AHNS Quadrennial International Head & Neck Meeting in 2008. Travelling fellowships were completed in the H&N departments at MSKCC New York in 2003 and the MD Anderson in 2005.

Richard has enthusiasm for many areas of head and neck oncology including premalignant lesions, prognostic factors, microvascular reconstruction (particularly in perforator flaps) and mandible/midface reconstruction. His translational interest is in molecular biomarkers, in particular epigenetic silencing of tumour suppressor genes, HPV related HNSCC and the molecular determinants of metastasis.

He is also an active contributor to and on the management board of Liverpool Cancer Trials Unit, LECMC, University Hospital Aintree R&D Board, the NCRI Clinical Studies Groups in Head and Neck Oncology and Biomarkers & Imaging , Royal College of Surgeons of England Academic and Research Board, Council of the International Academy of Oral Oncology, DoH National Working Party for Improving Recruitment in Interventional Trials, British Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons Research Sub-group.

With clinical and basic science colleagues, Richard co-founded the new Merseyside H&N Oncology Research group (MHNORG) within the CRUK Cancer Centre in Liverpool.  He is Chief investigator for three CR-UK clinical trials: HOPON, TITAN and DAHANCA-21. Richard also has an interest in training and education and is a regular faculty member on RCSEng CCrISP, Liverpool Practical Microvascular courses as well as undergraduate MBChB and BDS lecturing.

Postgraduate Programme

The University of Liverpool offers one of the best Ph.D. programmes in the U.K., and has been ranked 4th in a study of completion rates for Ph.D. students at universities by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).

Liverpool CRUK Centre Clinical Fellowship entry has closed for 2012

Donation Station Update
Managers from local Cancer Research UK shops have been delighted to receive more than 513 bags worth
up to £15,390. Please keep your donations coming in so we can reach our new target of 350 bags. Collection points are in the Centre's foyer, Duncan Building, and the DSO office.
Patient and Public Involvement

Many patients and public members work with researcher professionals and clinicians (e.g. doctors, nurses) and get actively involved in the different stages of research and associated activities. Active involvement in clinical research is very different from being a participant in a study Find out more..
