The group is applying live cell imaging to study cell proliferation, differentiation and death in the developing nervous system and in pathogenic environment (e.g low oxygen levels found in ischemic conditions or in tumours). We aim to understand, at a single cell level, how intracellular dynamics control the fine tuning of gene transcription and cell fate. Quantitative measurements in single living cells have shed light on unexpected complex dynamics including oscillatory behaviour. In collaboration with mathematicians, we use our data to uncover specific network motifs and understand diverse biological systems. In order to obtain a quantitative view of the gene regulation at a molecular level in living cells, the group is collaborating with physiscists and chemists to develop a method to enable protein-DNA binding visualisation and measurement in living cells at a single molecule level, based on monitoring protein-coupled-gold nanoparticles. |

Many patients and public members work with researcher professionals and clinicians (e.g. doctors, nurses) and get actively involved in the different stages of research and associated activities. Active involvement in clinical research is very different from being a participant in a study Find out more..
