Basic Research

Our basic science programme is focussed on the systematic understanding of gene families required for cell growth control and cell division which can be broken down into four main areas:

1. Cell migration and signalling. Encompassing the role of the Ras-superfamily of GTPases and their regulators in controlling cell growth, and ubiquitin biology with particular focus on de-ubiquitinating enzymes in the attenuation of receptor signalling.

2. Maintenance of genome stability. Analysis of the 4D (temporal and spatial) control of protein kinase and phosphatase activity in cancer cell division and p53 function during DNA replication.

3. Basis of individual susceptibility to cancer.

4. Development of novel chemical compounds with anti-cancer properties and the understanding drug metabolism and adverse drug reactions.

All of this research is directly relevant to the biology involved in our internationally recognised clinical specialisations. The combination of expertise that makes up the Centre allows us to pursue an integrated molecular, chemical, and clinical approach. Because of this we are in a strong position to identify novel targets for therapeutic agents, and novel biomarkers. By providing a forum to integrate these activities, the Liverpool CR-UK Centre will promote the development of individualied therapies for cancer.

Centre Resources
Donation Station Update
Managers from local Cancer Research UK shops have been delighted to receive more than 513 bags worth
up to £15,390. Please keep your donations coming in so we can reach our new target of 350 bags. Collection points are in the Centre's foyer, Duncan Building, and the DSO office.
Patient and Public Involvement
Many patients and public members work with researcher professionals and clinicians (e.g. doctors, nurses) and get actively involved in the different stages of research and associated activities. Active involvement in clinical research is very different from being a participant in a study Find out more..
